Our Island’s Facilities
Alderney has wonderful restaurants and pubs serving excellent organic island food, great hotels and beautiful beaches to roam. They are all loved and valued by islanders and you can learn all about them at the Visit Alderney website. For those considering living here full time there are other facilities that are also important, including our school, airport, medical facilities, banking, post office, sporting facilities, constabulary, court service, government services, shopping etc. As you can see below we are well looked after on Alderney.
The Essentials - Transport and Healthcare
The main airline for the island is Aurigny whose name derives from the local dialect meaning "Alderney". Our island had the first airport in the Channel Islands and has daily return flights to Guernsey and Southampton.
A £24 million upgrade to the Airport, supporting larger aircraft was recently approved and will commence shortly.
Le Mignot Memorial Hospital (MMH) is the centre for all nursing care on Alderney and care is provided by General Practitioners from the Islands Medical Centre. The Hospital has 22 beds, treatment, outpatient, and digital x-ray facilities.
Patients requiring care that cannot be given on island travel to Guernsey for regular appointments, consultations and treatments. Emergency cases are medevaced to Guernsey princess elizabeth hospital or direct to Southampton General Hospital.
The IMC is Alderney’s GP Surgery and has three full time doctors. Thanks to the IMC teams efforts nearly all of Alderney islanders have now been vaccinated against Covid 19. Learn more at the IMC Facebook page and the IMC website.
High Street Banking and Insurance
Alderney has a branch of HSBC on Island, toward the lower end of Victoria Street, with full time counter staff who provide great personal service and a cash machine.
Lloyds was at the top end of Victoria Street. Recently sadly closed.
Several local shops also offer cash back.
Because…we all need insurance. As our island is small, any driver car insurance is not expensive here.
Day to Day
Alderney has a post office with all the usual facilities.
There are two petrol stations on the island and vehicle service centres.
There are smaller DIY stores and a builders merchant offering all the usual services.
Civil Society
Alderney is a low crime environment, but should we need them we have three police officers to call upon.
The Court is often quiet. This beautiful building is also home to the land registry.
Our seat of Government
